The essentials in brief
Washing machines are commercially available as front-loading and top-loading. Depending on the design, the opening of the washing machine is on the front of the top. Front-loaders are usually built-in washing machines, while top-loaders cannot be built under.
Washing machines usually have a large capacity. In our washing machine comparison, we found that most laundry drums have a volume of 7 to 8 kg.
Only washing machines with energy efficiency class A+ or higher may be sold in the European Union. All washing machines are very economical anyway. Devices with energy efficiency classes A++ and A+++ are particularly efficient.
Washing machines are functional electrical appliances that make doing laundry much easier. That's why they can now be found in almost every household. According to statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, 96.4% of private homes in Germany own a washing machine.
If you would like to buy a new washing machine, our washing machine comparison will help you with your product search.
Because not all washing machines are the same! The washing machines differ in terms of capacity, energy efficiency class and the number of washing programs, among other things.
To avoid a bad buy, our washing machine comparison offers you orientation when making a purchase decision. In our buying guide, you can read what you need to look for when buying a washing machine.
1. What types of washing machines are there?
Our washing machine comparison 2022 showed that there are two types of washing machines. We have summarized these for you in the following table:
1.1. Front-loading washing machines are usually built under
The front loader is the most common type of washing machine. The drum of such washing machines is accessible through a door on the front side. In addition, the washing machine is usually equipped with a viewing window made of glass.
So while you remove the laundry from the front, a tumble dryer, for example, can be placed on top of the machine. Additionally, front-loading washing machines are typically built under. Washing machines in this category are also referred to as built-in washing machines.
In your washing machine test, you should take the door opening angle of the washing machine into account when measuring.
1.2. Top loaders are very space-saving
A top-loading washing machine opens at the top. For this reason, you cannot place devices such as your dryer on top of the washing machine with a top-loading machine.
Therefore, top-loading washing machines are not built under and are consequently not built-in washing machines.
Compared to the popular front-loading washing machines, top-loading machines have the following specific advantages and disadvantages:
Top-loading washing machines are often more compact and take up less space.
The laundry can be easily fetched from the top of the machine; you don't have to bend down or squat down.
Top-loading washing machines are less prone to technical problems: the washing machine drum and door are supported on both sides by roller bearings, so there are fewer leaks in the rubber seals.
Top-loading washing machines often have a smaller capacity than front-loading washing machines.
The top of your top-loading washing machine must be free for loading and unloading
By the way: You can create additional storage space with a stand for your washing machine. The washing machine is placed in the air to have space under your washing machine for your laundry basket or detergent. A washing machine stand is ideal for keeping the laundry room or bathroom tidy.
Connecting a washing machine with a dryer: Combination devices (also called washer-dryers) that combine washing machines and dryers are commercially available. A washing machine with a dryer is not only practical but also space-saving.
2. Which programs should your washing machine handle?
Modern washing machines have a large number of different washing programs. We have summarized the most important ones for you in the following table. In your washing machine test, make sure that your desired product can at least master these.
|Easy care program||The easy-care program is a special gentle program for textiles that require more intensive care. These include, for example, fine cotton or mixed fibres.|
|Delicate wash program||The delicates program is also a gentle programme. It is particularly useful for silk, as the high water level and low spin speed are mild.|
|cold wash program||In the cold wash program, your washing machine washes at around 20 °C. It is less suitable for removing stains and germs but can freshen up your clothes with great energy savings.
You should wash your clothes at least once a month with a heavy-duty detergent and 60 °C.
|express program||An express program (also known as a quick wash cycle) significantly reduces the time your washing machine needs. However, considerably more energy must be expended for this.
From an ecological point of view and with the electricity costs in mind, you should only use the express program seldom.
|wool programme||Particularly delicate wool should only be washed on the wool program or by hand. In addition, we recommend that you use a special wool detergent.|
3. Why is the best washing machine awarded a good energy efficiency class?
The energy efficiency class of a washing machine results, among other things, from the annual electricity and water consumption. In the meantime, only washing machines that have been awarded at least energy efficiency class A+ may be sold in the European Union.
Even cheap washing machines are already very energy-efficient. Nevertheless, we advise you to use a washing machine with class A+++ or A++ for your washing machine test. The Federal Environment Agency also recommends the highest possible energy efficiency class, preferably a class A+++ washing machine.
This not only saves you electricity and water costs but also protects the environment when washing. A high spin speed also has a positive effect on your energy consumption. The drier the textiles come out of the laundry, the less energy they need to dry.
You can save additional energy and water costs when doing laundry with the following tips:
Wash your laundry at 30°C. This is sufficient for deep cleaning. Only underwear, towels and bed linen should be washed at 60 °C. Up to 50% of electricity costs can be saved in this way. You should wash your laundry at 60 °C once a month to clean the machine.
Use the eco programs on your machine. With these, your laundry is soaked longer, and the washing temperature is reduced. Since the washing machine does not have to heat the water as much, your electricity consumption is reduced.
Only switch on your washing machine or washer-dryer when it is fully loaded. In this way, water and electricity are not used unnecessarily.
Spin efficiency class: In addition to your washing machine's annual electricity and water consumption, you can also see the spin efficiency of the device from the EU energy label. This indicates how much residual moisture is in your textiles after the end of the spin cycle.
4. Why does a washing machine test winner wash thoroughly and quietly?
The volume of your machine is also indicated on the energy label. A distinction is made between the noise level during washing and spinning. The associated unit of measure is the decibel (dB).
In your washing machine test, make sure that the noise level of your desired product is around 50 dB during washing. A volume of 70 dB should not be exceeded during the spin cycle.
In addition, your washing machine should be stable and as free as possible. Since the devices move minimally during the spin cycle, they can bump into neighbouring pieces of furniture or objects.
Did you know?
Connecting the washing machine or washing machine comparison showed that most devices generate a noise level of 45 to 55 dB when washing. According to ratings from passing machine users, the volume levels of modern washing machines range between the noise level of birdsong and a television set at room volume.
5. Why should the capacity of a washing machine depend on the number of people in the household?
In our washing machine comparison, we found that the capacity of the available washing machines is mostly in the medium to high range. Most appliances are washing machines with 7 kg or 8 kg.
According to recommendations, if you live in a single household, you should buy a washing machine with a capacity of at least 3 kg. For two to three-person families, a volume of 5 kg should fit into the drum.
You should reach for a washing machine with 8 kg and 7 kg, especially in a large household of 4 to 5 people. For groups of 6 or more people, we recommend a washing machine with a capacity of at least 8 kg. For smaller businesses or an even larger household, you need a washing machine with 9 kg.
Note that it takes longer to fill a large capacity washing machine. So you can wash less often or waste energy and water because your laundry drum is not full during the wash cycle..
By the way: There are also particularly small washing machines available in stores. These are often top-loading machines with around 2 to 4 kg. These mini washing machines are particularly compact and light. They are therefore particularly suitable for caravans.
Connecting the washing machine is particularly practical: washing machines with automatic loads calculate the amount of water and the duration of the wash cycle depending on the load. A washing machine with this function can reduce your energy and water consumption.
6. How do you connect your washing machine?
If no laundry room is available, the connection for the washing machine is usually in the bathroom or the kitchen. However, if you want to connect your washing machine yourself, follow the steps below:
Remove the shipping lock before you get started! Bolts are usually attached to the machine, which prevents the drum from swinging freely during transport. The device may be damaged if your machine is put into operation after assembly with these bolts.
Connect the water inlet and outlet hoses to your washing machine. The drain hose is slightly thicker and corrugated, while the water hose is thin and smooth. Ensure the hoses are screwed onto the fittings tight enough to avoid future leaks.
Now connect the hose for the wastewater to the sewage system and the hose for the water inlet to the appropriate water tap. Afterwards, your washing machine only has to be plugged into the socket.
Repairing your washing machine: If your washing machine is defective, we recommend laypeople not repair the washing machine themselves. So, if you do it wrong, you could get electrocuted. Cable fires or water damage can also occur. Before you have your washing machine repaired or even buy a new washing machine, you should always check whether you still have a warranty on the device.
7. How do you descale your washing machine?
Limescale and detergent deposits can permanently damage your machine. In addition, if you mainly wash at less than 60 °C, germs and bacteria can develop in your washing machine. We, therefore, recommend that you descale the washing machine twice a year.
A well-known myth is that vinegar is a particularly effective household remedy for descaling the washing machine. However, vinegar will attack the rubber seals in your washing machine and can damage them. You should also avoid soda or dishwasher tabs.
We recommend you use citric acid instead. Special descalers for washing machines are also commercially available. Water softeners can be used preventively, but they do not dissolve existing limescale residues.
Before you start descaling, we recommend cleaning the fluff filter and detergent compartment. Then mix 100 grams of citric acid with about 2 litres of water. Then pour the liquid into the detergent compartment.
Now set a washing program for boiled laundry without a prewash and let it run through. If you descale your washing machine with a special descaler, you should follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.
washing machine connection tip: IIn addition to descalers, other washing machine cleaners dissolve not only limescale but also dirt and bacteria. A distinction is made between liquids, usually filled into the detergent compartment, and powder, which you put directly into the drum. Washing machine cleaners are available in drugstores and online, among other places.
8. Why should your washing machine enable safe washing?
In your washing machine test, ensure that your desired product has a so-called aqua stop. If there is too much water in the inlet of the washing machine due to a defect, it is automatically blocked. This can prevent water damage. A child lock also increases the safety of your washing machine.
Pressing the Rinse Hold button will turn the washing machine off before draining the rinse water and spinning. Your laundry stays in the clean rinse water and can be taken out of the device at a later time.
This prevents sensitive laundry from being wrinkled or damaged by a spin dry. If you have changed your mind, you can start the spin cycle by pressing the rinse hold button again. The rinse hold program is particularly suitable for delicate, large-format textiles such as curtains or tablecloths.
9. Which manufacturers and brands of washing machines are there?

10. Questions and answers about washing machines
In the following chapter we answer frequently asked questions about washing machines:
10.1. Why does my washing machine stink?
If your washing machine stinks, this can have a variety of reasons. Dirt residues and hair can accumulate in the rubber seals, leading to an odour. If germs and bacteria form there, the unpleasant smell sometimes intensifies.
Bacteria and germs can also develop due to dirt and detergent deposits in the detergent compartment. A broken drain pump will cause water to collect on the bottom of your washing machine, leading to an unpleasant smell. Germs and bacteria in the fluff filter can also start to smell.
10.2. Why do socks disappear in the washing machine?
If you're missing a sock when hanging out the laundry, check the rubber seal on your washing machine opening. Small textiles such as socks or panties often get caught and are pressed deeper into the rubber seal with each additional wash cycle.
Finally, the sock goes inside your washing machine. It usually gets stuck on a heating rod or a rivet and dissolves over time.
10.3. How much water does a washing machine use?
According to washing machine tests, the actual consumption of your washing machine depends on the frequency of use and the amount of laundry washed. However, manufacturers must indicate the average annual consumption on the EU energy label.
Our washing machine comparison showed that the annual water consumption of commercially available washing machines is between 8,200 and 10,600 litres.
10.4. How long does a washing machine last?
On average, a washing machine lasts about ten years. Of course, the actual service life also depends on use and professional care frequency. If you use your washing machine every day, especially at low temperatures, you must expect signs of wear to appear soon.
So we advise you only to use your washing machine when the drum is full. You should also clean the device regularly and wash your laundry about once a month with a heavy-duty detergent and at 60 °C. This means that neither bacteria nor germs can settle in your washing machine.
