Buyer's guide

Do you enjoy a good cup of cappuccino? One of the most well-known espresso drinks is served in this diminutive yet powerful cup! It features the ideal blend of espresso, frothed milk, and foam. (We rank the macchiato as the best espresso beverage; more on that later.) What's this? You can prepare a cappuccino of barista caliber in the convenience of your house. We're teaching you all the tips and techniques you need to know in our Barista Series so you can prepare your favorite coffee drinks at home! Discover how to create a cappuccino that tastes and looks like it came from an Italian café.

What is a cappuccino, exactly?

Steamed milk, milk foam, and espresso are the ingredients in a cappuccino. Although the amount of steamed milk is different, it is fairly comparable to a latte (café latte). The comparison of a latte and a cappuccino is as follows:

  • Equal amounts espresso, heated milk, and froth (13 of each) make up a cappuccino.
  • A latte consists of 2/3 steamed milk and 1/3 espresso with a small coating of foam on top. Here is a diagram that explains it!

Both the flavor and the variances between the two beverages are rather slight. The cappuccino, though, is the simpler of the two to master at home, so you're in luck. Without an espresso machine, it's nearly impossible to achieve the microfoam, steamed milk with a wet-paint like texture that is required for a latte. Using numerous tools, including a whisk, frothed milk can be used to make a cappuccino.

First, you’ll need espresso!

For a cappuccino, you'll need to create espresso; just strong coffee won't do! As a result, you will require the following:

  • Espresso roast coffee: For the perfect dark, bitter flavor, the roast is crucial. Additionally, while making espresso, be careful to use a fine grind.
  • Aeropress, a manual espresso maker, or an espresso machine: Espresso can be made in various ways. We make espresso using a countertop-mounted espresso machine. Another option is to use a tiny manual espresso maker; it's more affordable and portable. The cheapest choice is an Aeropress; while it doesn't produce espresso as well, it gets the job done. Visit Aeropress Coffee.

The best milk for a cappuccino

What kind of milk is ideal for a cappuccino? Observe the following:

  • Use as fresh of milk as you can! Milk that is about to go bad does not foam as nicely. Rely on us; we discovered that the hard way!
  • What milk works best for a cappuccino? whole milk. Because it has the most milk fat, whole milk froths the best.
  • Also acceptable is 2% milk. Although it works reasonably well, some of the richness is lost.
  • For a vegan cappuccino, use oat milk. Oat milk is the greatest non-dairy milk to use since it froths the best and tastes the nicest. For further information, visit How to Froth Milk.

How to steam milk with an espresso machine (perfect cappuccino)

The device required to steam milk? a steamer and an espresso maker! This results in the greatest cappuccino foam, while heating milk gives the beverage a sweet, creamy flavor. It's still nice to have an espresso machine for this coffee drink even though you don't need to bother about the microfoaming technique for the ideal latte.

The negative? Espresso makers may be expensive. Here is the espresso maker that we employ; it is fantastic and is reasonably priced. However, you can also prepare a cappuccino by only whisking milk; for an example, check below! How to steam milk for a cappuccino is as follows:

Hold the steaming wand just below the milk's surface until the froth has doubled in size.
Use a thermometer or decide when your hand can no longer hold the pitcher for more than a few seconds to determine when the milk has reached 150 degrees Fahrenheit by slightly lowering the steaming wand.
For additional information, visit How to Steam Milk.

How to froth milk: without an espresso machine (cheater method!)

Lacking an espresso maker? No issue. You only need to heat and froth the milk to make a fantastic homemade cappuccino. To froth milk, you can use a variety of instruments (see more at How to Froth Milk). The best equipment we've discovered for a home barista to froth milk is listed below:

  • a portable milk frother. A portable milk frother is practical and affordable. For a macchiato or cappuccino, it makes the milk incredibly foamy.
  • press, french. If you make coffee in a French press, it works excellent for creating froth. With bubbles that are slightly bigger than the frother, it creates a lovely frothy foam.
  • Whisk. A whisk also works! It whips the milk up very effectively, producing somewhat larger bubbles and less froth than the alternative ways.

How to make a cappuccino at home!

Have you have your milk, coffee, and tools? Great. We may now get to the enjoyable part: making a cappuccino! To make this delicious espresso beverage, you'll integrate all the lessons you learned from the above reading.

  • Use an Aeropress, espresso maker, or equipment to make the espresso (see above).
  • (Using an espresso machine) Steam the milk To steam milk and make it frothy, refer to the notes in the section above.
  • OR, you could froth the milk after heating it on the stove. The ideal milk temperature is 150 degrees Fahrenheit, where it is warm to the touch but not simmering. Then, froth the milk using your preferred technique until it is extremely foamy. For a nice cappuccino, use a ratio of one third espresso to two thirds steamed milk to one third foam.
  • Serve. After adding the frothed milk, serve the espresso. It's wonderful to use a latte cup because it has the ideal quantity of capacity.

That's all, then! Making a cappuccino at home. If you give it a try, let us know how it goes, what tools you use, and what you think of it.
