Overview

Grooving, flushing, rabbeting, drilling, moulding are all actions that a router can perform.

Generally electro portable, this tool is widely used for woodworking. Here are some elements to guide you in your choice.

Mainly used in the wood trades, such as cabinetmaking or carpentry, the router allows machining, assembly, and finishing work to be carried out. This power tool has different cutters to adapt to any type of task, from grooves to moulded profiles. Therefore, a router consists of an engine block that allows the plunge of a tree on which is located a cutter.

The latter is fixed thanks to a clip assembled with the cutter's tail. The cutter shank diameter must therefore be compatible with that of the collet. To prevent the splitting of the wood, the latter's size is a factor in modulating the speed of the motor. For small parts, the power of the engine is more solicited

The presence of a drive is essential to adapt to your work. For tighter settings, ensure the depth stop is secure and does not move during machine operation. A micrometric system has greater precision.

It is more interesting to buy a router with several sizes of clamps to be able to use different kinds of cutters. In addition, we advise you to choose a conical type collet with a nut to prevent the blade from loosening in the middle of work.

For better comfort, it is advisable to prefer a tool with automatic suction for dust and shavings. Preferably, the device is located in the sole, round or half-round, or the column. A router usually comes with a rip fence.

It is possible to find guide rails or rules that guarantee a consistent quality of work. Note: if you work with wood only from time to time, know that adapters change a drill into a router.

The different kinds of strawberries

The flush milling cutter is the best-known model. It is used to drill laminated wood, veneer and plywood, and solid wood whose thickness is less than 25 mm.

The copy milling cutter has a bearing. Handled with a template, you can reproduce any shape.
The groove cutter and the tongue cutter are used together to cut grooves to fit pieces of wood together. To do together, use the groove cutter on one of the elements and the tongue cutter on the other.

Selection criteria

The power and the type of work: for minimal jobs requiring only small cutters, choose a router whose power varies between 400 and 600 watts. For everyday work, most routers sold on the market offer power ranging from 700 to 1,000 watts.

At this level, you will work the wood correctly with large cutters without losing the comfort of use. For people more experienced in handling a router, models exceed 1,100 watts. If this type of machine is ultra-efficient, it isn't easy to use and requires a particular skill.

Electronic speed adjustment:  is an option which makes it possible to avoid jerking phenomena when starting the router, which is very practical if you are using large diameter cutters or if you are working on soft materials. Note that this setting becomes essential for high power routers.

Clamping cutter attachment: Cutter fixing tightening: pay particular attention to fixing your future router. I prefer conical collets with a nut that have much more efficient clamping performance than all other collets. However, others include clamps by shank diameter, threaded cones or reduction tubes.

The shape of the sole: The shape of the sole is critical. Rectangular, round or mixed etc. Here are the different models currently available on the market. Choose a composite sole because its roundness will guarantee you better guidance on your piece of wood, while the straight lines will ensure better accessibility of cramped spaces.

The sliders: check that this guide tool slides smoothly and without interruption.

The price:  varies according to the power, the options present, etc. A router can cost between 100 and 350 euros. The price of a set of 6 common strawberries starts at 40 euros.
