Buyer's guide

I've made several references to how much I adore dip nails. As the color fades, they linger for weeks and are SO much less expensive than visiting a salon. You will need to remove the current dip or gel polish as your nails grow in order to add a fresh color. Rule 1: Never peel or scratch your nails! The nail bed will be harmed by this.

THE MATERIALS

For this small DIY, you don't need a lot of supplies, and the most of them can be found at any drugstore.

a decent bottle of acetone. Look at the labels; nail polish removers without acetone will take longer. Keep to pure acetone, which you can purchase at Target or your neighborhood pharmacy.
Clips for removing nail polish. In a pinch, aluminum foil will work, but it will be more messier. One of my favorite Amazon purchases is a set of these clips!
Pullable cotton balls that can be broken up into little pieces. For both hands, one cotton ball will do.

1. PREP THE MATERIALS

The part I detest the most is this. I'm not sure why, but I can't seem to tear apart (or use) cotton balls. But it's a requirement for this DIY. Therefore, cut the cotton ball into 10 tiny pieces (or have your husband do it, which is what I usually opt for).

A small amount of acetone should be added to the bottle's cap. In the following phase, you'll use this to dunk the cotton balls.

2. COVER EACH NAIL

A cotton ball should be dipped in the acetone and then slightly wrung out to prevent leaking. A nail cap should be used to finish off the cotton ball piece. You should now wrap the nail in aluminum foil if you're using that material.

I would advise doing one hand at a time if you have the time. Once the caps are on, you have to wait for each hand for ten to fifteen minutes.

You'll need to have some dexterity if you want to finish all 10 fingers at once but don't have much time. Except for your thumbs and pointers on both hands, cap all of your fingers. Prepare the caps for those four fingers (soak the cotton ball, position your nail inside the cap), and then, as a final step, clip the caps to those four fingers. Even with your other fingers already in their caps, it should be pretty simple to clip the caps. (Hopefully that made sense.)

3. WAIT

Ten to fifteen minutes. The darker the hue, the longer you'll need to wait, is a basic rule of thumb. Wait 15 minutes for a strong crimson or deep plum, versus 10 minutes for a light pink.

4. REMOVE THE CAP + POLISH

Pull back the cotton ball after removing the cap. The cotton ball should remove the majority of the dip or polish. Avoid scrubbing the polish! Your nail will be harmed by this.

Apply the cotton ball and clip again and wait a little longer if the polish doesn't come off easily the first time.

5. SMOOTH THE SURFACE OF THE NAIL

A nail drill will quickly remove any remaining polish or dip powder and prepare your nails' surface for brand-new lacquer or dip color.

Although it might appear terrifying, using a nail drill is actually very simple. Put a medium grit carbide drill bit in your nail drill, and then start it up at a medium-low speed (start out slowly if you've never used a drill before).

Drill slowly over the nail's surface to remove any remaining polish or powder specks and to smooth up the nail's surface.

You are now prepared for your subsequent DIY manicure (read how to do your own dip nails HERE). So simple, right?
