Power generator, power unit and generator - what are the differences?

These terms are often equated, but only two mean the same: generator and generator. There is no difference here. Both designations stand for a device that generates electricity. Every power producer needs a generator for this. This converts mechanical energy, i.e. movement, into electricity. As a rule, this movement is a turning, i.e. rotational movement.

The generator, in turn, needs a power source to start the rotary motion. This is usually an internal combustion engine. The generator is a part of the power generator. The petrol engine serves as a power source for the generator to generate the required electricity.

What types of power generators are there?

In principle, a distinction can be made between converters and inverter power generators. The difference between the two types is that a converter generator can have voltage fluctuations. This can damage voltage-sensitive devices such as a computer or TV. We will go into detail about inverter technology in the next section.

Generator sets can be operated with different fuels. Gasoline-powered generators are the most common. Some devices run on diesel or gas. Due to their design, solar-powered generators usually only supply a small amount of electricity. To build more powerful devices here, larger solar panels would have to be installed - which would be impractical for a mobile unit. You can usually only use solar generators as portable chargers.

What does inverter power generator mean?

An inverter power generator differs from a conventional device in terms of construction. With the inverter, the generator and motor are separate from each other and also perform their duties separately. For this reason, the two components do not have to work at the same frequency.

Direct current is converted into alternating current or direct voltage into alternating voltage. A downstream exchange electronics supplies a stable and pure sinusoidal voltage. Large voltage fluctuations are therefore excluded. The output voltage is independent of the engine speed.

The electricity is produced in the generator, which we have already mentioned a few paragraphs above. It is also in this part of the generator set that the difference between single and three-phase electricity lies. The latter is also called a three-phase current. To make it easier to understand the difference, we will briefly explain the structure and components of a generator.

Stator: This is made up of iron plates and coils. The current is fed from the waves to the socket. A single-phase generator has one lock installed, while a three-phase generator has three loops, each offset by 120 degrees. As the name suggests, the stator stands still.

Rotor: The rotor, which also contains a coil, rotates in the stator. Here it is always just one coil, whether it is a single-phase or a three-phase generator. In Germany, household alternating current has a frequency of 50 Hertz. The rotor has to rotate at 3,000 revolutions per minute to reach this frequency..

Voltage regulator: The rotor does not rotate at a constant 3,000 rpm. For this reason, a voltage regulator is needed. It regulates the voltage generated by the stator.

“The AC voltage generated in the generator runs like a sine curve. With only one coil, i.e. a single-phase generator, only a sinusoidal alternating voltage is produced. If three coils are installed, as is the case with a three-phase generator, three sinusoidal alternating current voltages are generated that are offset by 120 degrees. The frequencies of each of these three AC voltages are the same.”

There is a voltage of 230 volts between each of the three phases and the neutral conductor. For this reason, a three-phase generator can also deliver a normal alternating current with a voltage of 230 volts to a connected consumer. On the other hand, between any two phases, there is a voltage of 400 volts. Consumers can therefore be connected that require the current, commonly known as heavy current, to operate.

When does a generator need to be grounded?

Whether or not a power generator needs to be additionally grounded depends on various factors. This includes whether your device is dropped, for example, a ground spike. If that's the case, you should use it. However, if your device does not have such an earth connection, this does not mean that the generator is more dangerous to handle. Normally, power generators with an output of up to 10 kilowatts are equipped with a potential protective equalization. This protects you from an electric shock. Such devices, therefore, do not have to be grounded additionally.

Does a generator need maintenance?

Generator sets that are powered by an internal combustion engine require regular maintenance. This is the only way to ensure long-term operational readiness. We have listed the maintenance measures for you.

It is best to change the engine oil and the oil filter after about 100 operating hours. If you rarely use your generator, you should change it once a year to increase the service life of the engine.

At the same time, check the spark plugs as well. If you find deposits, replace the old spark plugs with new ones.

If the air filter is very dirty, replace it.

In addition to checking wear parts, regular maintenance also includes good care of the power generator. Clean the generator set after use and store it in a dry, sheltered place.

Important rules for the safe operation of a power generator

If you use a generator set as a power source, you should be aware that it is - at least in most cases - powered by an internal combustion engine. Since your safety when using the products we present is important to us, we have put together a few basic rules for handling such devices for you.

Combustion engines, including power generators with combustion engines, must never be used in closed or poorly ventilated rooms. The machines produce dangerous CO, i.e. carbon monoxide. It's not just poisoning. Carbon monoxide is also highly flammable and explosive.

Power generators are not suitable for use in damp or even wet environments. So protect the device from rain and snow with a suitable cover.

Operating in a very dusty environment is also dangerous. Dust or sand can enter the device through the air inlets.

If you need to add petrol to the tank, wait until the engine has cooled to avoid being burned by the highly flammable liquids and their vapours.

Check the device for any damage before use.

Connect an extension cord to the generator set, making sure the cord is fully unwound from the drum. When rolled up, the cable can become very hot.

The maximum output of a power generator should only be used for a short time. Using the specified continuous power protects the device from overloading. This could cause not only damage to the generator itself but also the connected consumer. This also extends the service life of the generator.

It would be best if you did not connect a power generator directly to the house power supply. If you would like to integrate a power generator into the domestic power supply, please leave this to a specialist, i.e. a qualified electrician.
